Where can I get help with funding for my start up costs?
Where can i get funding for my initial start up costs?
I have always wanted to own my own coffee shop.
I live in a town where there are lots of potential customers, and there is a good selection of coffee shops, but i believe there is room for another, especially in a store that has just come up TO LET.
The main start up costs I can perceive are
Rent, which would be pretty high, as it is a popular town, busy pavement, but there are quite a few empty premises.
Decoration, the place was recently renovated, so just a new sign, and some furniture.
General running costs – should be covered easily enough with custom.

Mugs and Crockery (Takeaway),
Coffee + Sugar,
Lighting, heating, Air-con, water, waste.
Wage (me + one of my friends) ? £400 per week total to start.
Don’t underestimate what it will cost you. Whatever you calculate your budget as, add another 50% for the unexpected. Explore every avenue for reducing the initial outlay e.g. If you talk to the coffee machine supplier, they would probably lease you one which would cost you more ultimately but gets you up and running cheaper or try and bargain them down on the price. I would guess that not many people are buying coffee machines at the moment so you should be able to negotiate a good deal – you might even be able to get an interest free 6-12 month repayment scheme off them.
Other costs to bear in mind would be:
Business rates – talk to the council and see if you can get reduced rates for taking on an empty property.
Water rates
Insurance – really shop around.
Advertising
Legal & professional costs
Talk to your local Business Link who will help you put a business plan together which will show you what the initial cost will look like being and also put you in touch with various other organisations who may help with start up grants etc.
The main point though is to make sure there is a viable business and you need to find an edge – you said there are is a good selection of other coffee shops around so why will anyone come to yours? What will you do differently?

There was this bah kut teh store in Penang which I used to frequent when visiting.
During my recent trip, the store had moved and the coffee shop owner didn’t want to tell me where.
It was at the junction of Carnarvon St, just after the turn from Prangin Mall. If I am not mistaken, there is a fruit store at the corner in the morning and a crockery shop next to it.
I am desperate to locate it as I think it’s the best in Penang. Thanks!
