How to take care of your Glassware

Licensees now realise that their glassware, which is after all the packaging of a major part of their sales, is as important as the décor in reinforcing their outlets image!
For the licensee, choosing the right glass for each drink and being aware of its importance can make a real difference to sales and profits. How drinks are presented matters! There is literally a huge range of shapes of glass available all of which have their own unique features and purpose.
Self-promotion is an important part of maintaining your market share and brand awareness in the competitive world of Hospitality. Your customers are keen to associate themselves with key brands, which have an image of style, or in some cases expense!
This trend is highlighted by the bottled beer market where drinkers advertise what they are drinking to share in the image of the brand.
Decorated ceramics, glassware plastics and cutlery can also be used to reinforce the name of an outlet, an option available for low volume commitment and provides you with an inexpensive way to make a huge impact on your customers.
The correct handling and care of glassware will enhance the appearance and longevity of the product in use.
The following is a guide that will assist you in this quest.
Care must be taken to ensure that each glass is in perfect condition and is scrupulously clean.
Basic tips to avoid unnecessary breakage are:
- Do not put cutlery into glasses
- Never pick up glasses in clusters, try to use a glass carrier
- Be careful to avoid contact with beer tap
- Do not put cold liquids into hot or warm glasses straight from the glass washer as this can cause cracks
- Do not stack glasses that have not been designed to stack
- Pre-heat glasses for hot drinks by running them under the hot tap
Dishwasher
Most glassware may be cleaned in the dishwasher. Again there are some do’s and don’ts when using dishwashers:
- Always wash new glasses before use
- Always use non-caustic detergent as caustic detergents affect retention, etch the glass and give the glass a shadowy tinge
- Water on the premises should be stored at 60 degrees centigrade. If water is stored at a higher temperature e.g. 85 degrees, by the time it has reached the machine it may be 75 degrees – high enough to bake debris onto the glass
- Coffee cups should never be washed in a glass washing machine, as coffee dregs can taint the water and stain the glasses – this also applies to drinks that contain cream
- If cracks or chips are found in glasses, they should be discarded immediately
Glasswasher
Optimum solution for taking care of your glassware is to use a glasswasher as this enables you to wash high volumes of glassware in a short space of time.
Benefits of using a glasswasher over a dishwasher:
- Integral detergent pumps provide correct dosage for each cycle
- Shorter wash cycles as they can be as quick as 2 minutes
- Keeps water at optimum temperature of 60 degress means that no debris can be caked on
- Low capacity tanks to reduce water consumption
Storage
All glasses should be stored in a way that air can freely move around, especially after coming out of the glass washer to prevent mould and give you cleaner glasses.
When storing glasses on a shelf make sure you use a shelf liner that will allow the air to flow in the glass, making the drying process faster.
