Crockery: What You Need To Know
Crockery plays several roles at the dining table. For some, it soothes the mind by bringing light and colour to the dining table. It can add beauty and gravity to the table setting, and it can impress guests with your tastes. In general, any type of dishware can be considered crockery. Whether you are purchasing tableware, cookware or service ware, you will be considering crockery. Since these are items we use on a daily basis, taking the time to research your purchase is vital to making the right decision. Crockery can be made from glass, porcelain, bone China, stoneware and stainless steel.
The most basic type of crockery is ceramic crockery. This is made from clay fired at a high temperature. The overall look is pleasing, while the clay makes it quite durable. Earthenware, stoneware and porcelain all fall under the ceramics category. Earthenware is particularly popular for crockery.
Porcelain, while a type of ceramics, brings a higher price than other types of crockery. Many choose a few porcelain pieces to enhance the beauty of their place setting. While the term porcelain brings to mind something fragile, porcelain is actually quite strong. This type of crockery was first made in China, and soon spread into the rest of the world. Porcelain has several different kinds, which are distinguished by the way they are produced. These include hard-paste, soft-past and mild porcelain.
Bone China has a gorgeous appearance, adding a fine look to the table. However, this type of crockery is the most fragile, which means it is not ideal for everyday use.
Stoneware, another type of ceramics, graces many kitchen tables. This long-lasting type of crockery can withstand high temperatures. Stoneware pieces go in the microwave, dishwasher, oven and refrigerator without problems. Most kitchens have several pieces of stoneware, but many forget what the type of crockery is called. If you take a look in your kitchen cabinets, you will likely find a piece or two of stoneware.
In the Asian world, many use stainless steel crockery. This hard, durable crockery protects water well, is quite durable and has a low cost. Many lower-income people throughout the world use stainless steel crockery for their everyday needs, particularly to preserve water.
Glass, which is used extensively as a dishware, looks quite nice on the table. However, one problem with glass is the extensive care necessary to keep it looking nice. Many who own glass pieces fail to maintain them properly, ending up with unsightly chips and scratches.
When purchasing crockery, you are not limited to buying just one type. In fact, the different types often work well when used in combination. You will need to consider your table setting, tastes and the amount of use the pieces will receive, and then make your choice.
